Partial results show that the pro democracy candidates secured at least 22 seats in the 60 seat council. Voting in England reports from HongKong.
Amid predictions of heavy losses, parties in the democratic campaign have done better than they had feared. Some had issued statements during voting on Sunday that the situation was critical. Others volunteers were expecting to lose. Instead, the democratic camps secured four out of six seats available on HongKong island. And less has been predicting that popular votes might not be a solid democracy as usual.

It was speaking in a ? briefing reported at the white house at the end of one of the most turbulent day in recent financial history when share prices across the world tumbled in the wake of the collapse of one of the America’s most prestigious investment banks, ? Brothers . ? reports from New York.
As around the world, so too in the heart of the global financial system, US stock market had a terrible day. The Down Jones fell an estimated 500 points, the worst drop in one day since the September 11th attack in 2001. And no wonder, the collapse of ? Brothers showed that no company, whatever its history or reputaion, is guaranteed to be safe. The troubles that brought about the collapse of ?, bad investment in US housing markets, are still concerning other big financial institutions here. And it’s now clear that the US Treasury will not necessarily step in to save a firm in difficulty.

Intensive talks are going on in the United States to try to rescure the insurance company AIG, the latest institution under threats from the global financial turmoil. Shares in New York closed up amid speculation that some progress has been made towards an agreement, but the nature of any rescue package remains unclear. Here’s our economic correspondent Andrew Walker.
AIG has been described as too big to fail. If it were to go, many say it would be a bigger problem in Lehman Brothers. So the negotiation has been taken place in the Federal Reserve’s office in New York. The option appeared to be some sort of private sector rescue with or without contribution for the public finances. The Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson doesn’t want to ?. ? show that we can when he allowed Lehman to sink rather than give financial guarantees, the potential private sector bars wanted.
Within the past hour, AIG itself said it was continuing its effort to increase its short-term liquidity, but ? its world-wide operation was not ?. Reports say another face of the up turn in New York share prices was a degree of optimism that the deal might be done with the British bank ? to try to take over some of the operations of the bank ? US investment bank Lehman Brothers. British also took some comfort from the statement by the Federal Reserve, expecting confidence in the long-term prospect for the economy. Earlier in the day, US share’s ? up interest rates were left unchanged. It was markets abroad that continue to suffer from the uncertainty of America with further sharp fall in Europe and Asia. Treaty in Moscos was suspended temporily after the worst one day fall in ten years.
