Welcome to the latest global news recorded at 1500 GMT on Tuesday, the 12th of August. I am Caroline Daffodil with the selection of highlights from across the BBC World Service news today.

And coming up, President Medvedev orders Russian troops to stop military operations in Georgia. We hear what the effect of the fighting has been for people living on the front line.

I can see what they are pulling out, and basically it's just body parts. It s his son, this woman cries, pointing at a man in front of me.

We will find out about the humanitarian situation in Georgia+/ and we'll have a report on how politicians in the US are reacting to what is going on there. Also-, in the podcast, Mexico sets up a special unit+ to combat the recent rash of kidnappings-, many involving teenagers/ and fakery+ at the opening of the Olympic Games. The little girl’s singing was mimed, and the fireworks weren't real either.

For safety sake, [what] we did was, we provided television with a computer simulation of the footprints being shot into the sky.

At first, it looks as though the fighting between Georgia and Russia over South Ossetia may be drawing to a close for the moment anyway. Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev has now ordered an end to the military action. He said the purpose of the operation to restore security for civilians and Russian peacekeepers in the breakaway region of South Ossetia had now been achieved. But he stressed that in the event of Georgian attacks, his troops would hit back. He gave this account in a televised meeting with military chiefs.

On the basis of your report, I've decided to conclude the operation to force the Georgian authorities into peace. The aim of the operation has been achieved. The safety of our peacekeeping forces and the civilian population has been restored. The aggressor has been punished and has suffered very significant losses.

However, Tbilisi says Russian planes have been bombing Georgian territory close to the Ossetian border. And in Abkhazia, separatists are trying to dislodge Georgian troops from their last stronghold in that breakaway region.

Well, let's just have a quick reminder of the background to all of these. Georgia sent its forces into South Ossetia late last week after skirmishes with separatists there. And what the Georgians now say were Russian troop movements into the region which calls itself independent. Russia responded by pouring in troops. It says it was acting as a peacekeeper. But whether or not, hostilities have finally stopped. It's clear there has been significant loss of life and terrible damage in and around South Ossetia. Well, in a moment, we will have a report from the Georgian town of Gori, but first we hear from Mira, an English teacher in Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia. Mira has welcomed the intervention of the Russians there. She gave her reaction to the news that Russia had declared the operations over.

Of course, when the, the fighting gets stopped, it's always good news, but we want to be sure that we are now secure from any attacks from Georgian side, and of course, we would like our families to come back to the town, but they have no places to come back.

And Mira went on to describe what the city looked like after the bombardments of the past five days.

It is quiet now, no bombing, no shooting, no fire, only Russian troops and native guards. No electricity, all the infrastructure is destroyed. No gas, no water, that's what I've seen. The houses, all the buildings in the town, especially in the central parts of the town, are destroyed and lie in ruins. They are to ashes. And many people there killed, and when you passed about, along the streets that awful smell is going out of the basements of the houses. And people are trying to take them from under the ruins to the hospital. But the hospital suffered great damages, because there was [a] tank attack, and there was bombing by Georgian troops directly at the hospital, they were aiming , you know. We need Russian troops, because we, we will never feel safe with our neighbors if Russian troops don't stand between us.

Well, that's the view from inside South Ossetia where a majority of the 70, 000 people have Russian passports. For the rest of Georgia, the pictures are rather different. Our correspondent, Natalia Antelava, traveled to the town of Gori, near the border from where she sent this report.
rash of something: a large number of unpleasant events, changes etc within a short time.

Welcome to the latest global news recorded at 0300 hour BST on Monday, 18th August. I'm Mark Whitaker with selaction highline from the cross bbc world news sevice today.

And coming up, the US says the Russia has returned the souvier style polices and Georgia, its reputation in tatis.

“There is a real concern that Russia has turned the corner here and is headed back toward its past.”

And the fastest spit on the planit she made anther try on Olimpics.

It is your foriget, absolutely mind noming which may concern seems as the, I'll know speech them is beyond words.

That is all here,on the global news podcast.

That's confusion this morning in Georgia, most of price there.Moscow said that days ago it would withdraw its troops, but they'll remain in place, in some areas, and even vast further in Georgia. The Russia president Dmitry Medvedeve has told his friend camp part Nicolas Sarkozy that they will begin polling out forces on Monday, aparented by noon.and a French official said Mr.Sarkozy worn the Russian president the serioursly concecrencies if Russia fail into  empliment it side pistil. But the
American mean, what the US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice has said Russian reputations of pertential partner the international  institutions is in tatis. and the US defence secretary Robert Gates tried that Russia's behavior was chararistics so expiered that have no place in the 21st century.

There is real concern that the Russia has turned the conern here and has its hit the tour past, rather the tour in the future. my hope is that we will see actions weeks or months come, and the privide the civilian asurance. It's say too early too say ,whether ,the action has taken are,are sorry concludsive in one way another. but, but, I think we're all very disturbed by,by what has taken place in Georgia.

On the face of it, the question as seems to be simple one. will Moscow poll back its troops? but of course, thinks more complecated than that, many other question to be answered. how many troops will return to Russia?how many will remain in South Ossetia?// offical in Georgia. in // all of some cluse from main janeral //. he is the commander of Russia frond line forces and he will speaking in the Georgia town Gori.

Stay here and wait, and you will then hear some sentional news. peacekeeping // moving into places here, with baggits on their slieves. these other peacekeepers rebine in 12 years. they will replace the troops step by step and troops will be withdraw.

// will believe that when he ceased it. his secretary of Georgias cencile. and hit two its town of Gori.// if he seen any signs of Russian withdraw.

No, I see what Iseeing is ready ployment in loction then that position never been before. they're moving inside the country.

So what real is happening in Georgia far of troops movement concern?Well, what we get some ideas, // is speaking to our correspondent in Moscow.

The Russian president has spoke the French president. that  the statement issue by France, the world retrict withdraw by Russia with began on 12 o'clock on Monday. Now the crisis statement is much, much waker than that. the equitement statement will simply said the troops withdraw will begin on Monday, but that makes clear the troops will not withdraw into Russia as supporse of recorded happen in the ceasefire plan. and instead, that statement says that the troops will go back to South Ossetia, and to describe this securitiy which established in 1999.and I'll be asking around what about securitise of means and I am told that is 14 kilometer bufful zone. from border of South Ossetia. Now what about the infactely means it France //interpreter way what seems we doing, is another fact that the Russian troops inside Georgia proper // a cuple of kilomiters. so it's very quite way. and I think it any actually movement on the ground inside Georgia, it's very hard to know what exactely what Russia going to do.

Welcome to the latest global news recorded at 0300 BST on Monday, the 18th of August. I'm Mark Whitaker with the selection of highlights from across BBC World Service news today.

And coming up, the US says Russia’s return to Soviet-style policies in Georgia has left its reputation in tatters.

“There is a real concern that Russia has turned the corner here and is headed back toward its past.”

And the fastest feet on the planet, Jamaica celebrates another triumph at the Olympics.

It’s euphoric, it's absolutely mind-numbing the way the Jamaicans feel today. I mean we are all speechless. This is beyond the words.

That’s all here on the global news podcast.

There is confusion this morning in Georgia, no surprise there. Moscow said days ago it would withdraw its troops, but they remain in place, and in some areas, have even advanced further into Georgia. The Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has told his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy that they will begin pulling out forces on Monday, apparently by noon. And French officials say Mr. Sarkozy warned the Russian president of serious consequences if Moscow failed to implement its side of the peace deal. But in America meanwhile, the US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said Russia’s reputation as a potential partner in international institutions is in tatters. And the US Defense Secretary Robert Gates chided that Russia’s behavior was characteristic of the Soviet period and have no place in the 21st century.

There is a real concern that Russia has turned the corner here and is headed back toward its past, rather than toward its future. And my hope is that we will see actions in the weeks and months to come that provide us some reassurance. It’s too early to say whether it's, whether the actions it’s taken are, are sort of conclusive in one way or another. But, but I think we are all very disturbed by, by what has taken place in Georgia.

On the face of it, the question now seems to be a simple one. Will Moscow pull back its troops? But of course, things are more complicated than that, and there are many other questions to be answered. How many troops will return to Russia? How many will remain in South Ossetia? Will they establish a buffer zone in Georgia proper? Well there are some clues from Major General Vyachislav Borisov. He is the commander of Russian frontline forces and he was speaking in the Georgian town of Gori.

“Stay here and wait, and you will then hear some sensational news. Peacekeeping battalions are moving in to replace us here, with badges on their sleeves. These are the peacekeepers who have been here for twelve years. They will replace the troops step by step and troops will be withdrawing.”

Alexander Lomaya will believe that when he sees it. He is Secretary of Georgia’s National Security Council. And he too is in the town of Gori. Alexander Lomaya was asked if he’d seen any signs of a Russian withdrawal.

Coming up,a new area from Pakistan its president steps down ternatal gether to respond to Russia, the US they will be consequency of Moscow exits it is // by the peace plan.

Generally speaking, that'll be drawing two south city and rest are just Russia both longer sercurity and area and which was its establish many years ago.

And the polsl all of border between Canada and the United States,we'll man tast with breathing it.

If they think that they are going to turn arounds and come through here think it is wide open and think again. Not here, not on my watch.

All that plus on the day of high dramas in the Olympics will found out what the gold metal really worth. All this moment many Pakistan say they have been waitting for years.

After the examine in tire situation and councilting legaling advisers and political airline and after taking that advise for the safe of the country and the people,I have to decide to resided today from my boust.

President // anouncement that it stepping down and // police to hiry was // see member of governing Pakistan people's party. For the first time the mocracy Pakistan has restro do extent that the to legal constitution moyar, the detatship that has leminaty, that has a sorts of satisfaction for me.Pakistan's ambassor was in the United States has said // speaking to the bbc // // he said Pakistan was entring a new area of the mocracy.Pakintan is now ready for democracy and // // depart basicly means that the league last sticky is over.Pakinstan can now move on with nomal politic without nolige problems and all of weaknesses and the strength, but the future Pakistan with the determine by the constitution of Pakistan,by political party, and by civilian forces and that has rules amounts of people.

Because your crulsil country in the world tearage graphically in particular, your air is going to asking what this mean for them and the United States is used to be able get one man on a phone when they need to talk to Pakistan general // .Now who were late to talk to the fractual colition.

I don't think that is a colition describtion Pakistan has a lick to the Prime Minister its foreign minister // // dealing with the doer is not going to change just because one person is not there.I think the problem line is in capital with people and people who are in foreign policy in captial think that is eacier who are doing business with one individual, I think now the procesal decission making might be more complex in Pakistan but when the decission are meet, promisses are given and those promisses must be kept  in changes in that sense and I think washinton D.C. are both recognising that it is civilian elicted govenment is going to be a better airline again in the future.

As an abasstor to the U.S. Washinton  is going to ask you immediately what is your government stand on terro what you are going to tell them.

I think the United States government knows that the elected  government clear and considering what again terrorizm in Pakistan and all we like to fight terorrizm not because the U.S. tell us the //, but  because it is a // to the Pakistan sercurity and Pakistan exact leadership were very of the threat terrorizm because // the icon of Pakistan into mocracy was a victem of terrorizm I think the only difference is that the insise that // instavement neplatin what again stear to stay in Pakistan leader is refight to what against to win.

Can you share some line behind the sinse this weeken which lets President // to believe after say he wouldn't.

I think the // legal land standing everybody understood that he has lost all of the support people and his birth a poor rating was in single digets,I think that his party loss in the election of Fabuary 18th should be atually being the in the future.I think it was not so much the deal of the political reality on ground and that force to sent and let him nation.

You meant that the world deal is the United States player party negotiating.

First of all,I did not meet to the deals I just said that instead of the deals for taship doubt come has been the vail of the people of Pakistan and there are of the fabruary election and in the fact it has been in peachment posiding // servive those.

Pakistan and // to the U.S. who saying //.

Welcome to the latest global news recorded at 0300 BST on Tuesday, the 19th of August. I'm Mark Whitaker with the selection of highlights from across the BBC World Service news today.

And coming up, a new era for Pakistan as the president steps down. And NATO gathers to plan its response to Russia. The US says there will be consequences, but Moscow insists it is abiding by the peace plan.

Generally speaking, we are withdrawing to South Ossetia. The rests are just observation posts along that security area which was established many years ago.

And the poorest border between Canada and the United States will meet the men tasked with policing it.

If they think that they are going to turn around and come through here, think that it's wide open, think again. Not here, not on my watch.

All that's plus on a day of high drama in the Olympics, we'll find out what a gold medal is really worth.

Well, this was the moment many Pakistanis say they've been waiting for four years.

After examining the entire situation, and consulting my legal advisers and political allies, and after taking their advice, for the sake of the country and the people, I have decided to resign today from my post.

President Musharraf's announcement that he's stepping down, and among those pleased to hear it was Babar Awan, a senior member of the governing Pakistan People's Party.

For the first time, democracy in Pakistan has matured to an extent that through legal constitutional measure, dictatorship that has been eliminated. That‘s the source of satisfaction for me.

Pakistan's ambassador to the United States is Husain Haqqani. Speaking to the BBC's Pascale Harter, he said that Pakistan was entering to a new era of democracy.

Pakistan is now ready for full democracy. And General Musharraf's departure basically means that the legacy of the last decade is over. Pakistan can now move on with normal politics, with all its problems and all its weaknesses and its strength, but the future of Pakistan will be determined by the Constitution of Pakistan, by its political parties and by the civilian political forces that have roots amongst the people.

Because you are such a crucial country in the war of terror geographically, in particular, your allies are going to be asking what this means for them. Now the United States used to able to get one man on the phone when they needed to talk to Pakistan, General Musharraf. Now, who will they talk to in that fractured coalition?

I don't think that that is a correct description. Pakistan has elected prime minister. It has a foreign minister. And Pakistan in dealing with the rest of world is not going to change just because one person is not there. I think the problem lies in capitals where people think and people who run foreign policy in foreign capitals think that it's easier for who are doing business with one individual. I think now the process of decision-making might be more complex in Pakistan. But when decisions are made, promises are given, and those promises will be kept. Things have changed in that sense. And I think Washington D. C. and London are both recognizing that a civilian elected government is going to be a better ally in the world against terror for the future.

As ambassador to the US, Washington is going to ask you immediately, what is your government's stance on terror, what are you going to tell them?

I think that the United States government knows that the elected government is very clear and considering the war against terror as Pakistan's war. We would like to fight terrorism, not because the US tells us, it's true, but because it is a threat to Pakistan's own security, and Pakistan's elected leadership is very aware of the threat of terrorism ,because Benazir Bhutto, the icon of Pakistan in democracy, was a victim of terrorism. I think that the only difference is that instead of manipulating the war against terror to stay in power, Pakistan's elected leaders will fight the war against terror to win.

Can you shed some light on the deals that were made behind the scene this weekend which led President Musharraf to leave after saying that he wouldn't?

I think that General Musharraf was only grandstanding. Everybody understood that he had lost the support of the people. And his personal approval rating was in single digits. I think that his party is loss in the election of February 18th should have actually been a watershed, in terms of him deciding his own future. I think that it was not so much the deals but the political reality on [the] ground that forced his hand and led to his resignation.

But you admit there were deals, did the United States play a part in negotiating? "

First of all, I did not admit to deals. I just said that instead of deals, what have shaped the outcome has been the will of the people of Pakistan and the result of the 18th February election, and the fact that if there had been impeachment proceedings, there was no way General Musharraf could have survived those.

Pakistan's Ambassador to the US, Husain Haqqani.

Hurricane Gustav is advancing inland from the Gulf Coast of the United States after the worst of the storm missed New Orleans, the city devastated by Hurricane Katrina 3 years ago. An estimated 2 million people headed inland to escape Gustav which left about 90 people dead last week as it crossed the Caribbean. Kevin Connolly reports from New Orleans.

For several hours in the early part of the day, New Orleans was battered by powerful squalls that threatened to dump four-month worth of normal rainfall in a single morning. The waters of the city's Industrial Canal rose to the very top of the concrete floodwall which channels it through the suburbs. But so far, the defenses have held. Hundreds of thousands of residents must now decide when they should return to their homes, but overall the feeling is one of relief.

“We didn't just dodge a bullet”, said one local official, “we dodged a cannonball.”

The Republican Party in the United States has opened its convention where John McCain is due to be nominated as the party's presidential candidate. Most of the day's political events were suspended out of respect for communities affected by Hurricane Gustav. Mr. McCain's wife Cindy and the First Lady Laura Bush appeal for help for victims of the storm.

The effect of Hurricane Gustav is just now being measured. When such events occur we are reminded that first we are all Americans. And that our shared American ideals will always transcend political parties and partisanship.

European Union leaders have postponed their next round of talks with Russia on a planned partnership agreement in response to Moscow's military action in Georgia. At an emergency summit in Brussels, President Nicolas Sarkozy of France said the EU would have to reexamine its relationship with Russia if it did not pull back its troops in Georgia in line with the ceasefire agreement that it signed. The Russian envoy to the EU Vladimir Chizhov described the postponement of talks as inappropriate but he said he was not inclined to overdramatize it.

I believe the overall balance of this summit to be not as bad as it may seem to those who focus only on one issue. But of course, if the European Union is eager to reassess its relations with Russia, it's entitled to do so, just as Russia is entitled to reassess its relations with the EU.

Thousands of pro and anti-government demonstrators have clashed in Thailand in the worst violence since the start of an opposition campaign to oust the Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. At least one person was reported dead and more than 30 injured after supporters of Mr.Shinawatra tried to march on his office compound which became occupied by the opposition People's Alliance for Democracy. Thai television showed people bleeding on the streets and the police chief said he called in the army to help quell the unrest.

World News from the BBC.

The Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda has announced that he's resigning, less than a year after he took office. Mr. Fukuda blamed the stalemate in the opposition controlled Upper House of Parliament for his departure. In contrast with his more nationalist predecessors, Mr. Fukuda has sought to improve relations with China but he's being accused of lacking charisma.

The Senate in Pakistan has demanded an investigation into reports that at least 3 women were murdered in a rural area of Baluchistan. [They] are being buried alive after being accused of dishonoring their families. Pakistani human rights workers say the women were abducted by local tribesmen because they’ve planned to marry without their relatives' consent. This report from Barbara Plett in Islamabad.

Human rights activists outside parliament shouted "shame! Shame!" They were furious that a senator had called the murder of women a reflection of tribal tradition. In Pakistan's conservative countryside, it's not uncommon for male relatives to kill women accused of violating family honor. Rights groups and news reports have alleged that the killed women belong to a political family connected to the governing Pakistan People's Party and use their influence to block a police investigation.

Thomas Bata who for four decades around the worldwide shoe business which bore his name has died in hospital in Canada. He was 93. Mr. Bata ,whose father founded the business in what is now the Czech Republic, fled to Canada to escape the Nazis in 1938. He then established Bata's headquarters in Toronto and headed the company until the 1980s.

And scientists in the United States say playing or even watching sport can improve intelligence. Researchers in Chicago monitored the brains of ice hockey players and fans, they found that when they listen to conversations about their sport, they use parts of their brains usually associated with planning and controlling actions.

Welcom to the latest global news recorded 0300BST on Tuesday the Second of September,I'm Mark selections of highlines across bbcworldservice news today.

And today simple revolations charter one John MeCane is running mains on teenagers doughts is precnent republicans won't casting the first stone.

Everythings reflects the governor paid and my husband is headal this is parents, they love their daughter on conditionly and that is what I expected.

Also coming up,// the classes in the street of Bangkok the Prime Minister of Thailand decleared the emergency in the capital. From Afganistan the case of student comdam to death for using the internet and Egypt has best saling novelist on the limitations of free speech.

The fomilian Egypt know its you said what you want and the government is doing what they wants and I don't think this is a freedom reflection.

It has been difficult 24hs for the republican party in the United States this is meamt to be the weak of John MeCane try an coernations of party presidential candidate, the then hurricane Gustav came along, the case of Gustav turned out not to be a gazi is many // pridicted New Orleans has been spared. The republican ditermination to put on dignify show the hurricen was threatnings definetly upset scheduals, president Bush // wasn't no show in munite shouter, and then another storm threaten. It turned out the last governor salary paylian the woman chosen by John MeCane to be his running mate, her unmarried teenager daughter is five months prenent so no Georgia Bush,no // ,no hurricane, just may be the vife a pretty small scandal. What clear // is that the conventions of the poll for the BBC may be the deligats from themseves develope the lour san.

Well,I think that is really welcomed the rather relief //  republican party they had turned out the //suddent setanecy that also to boring persigeral stuff and let's smiling the end of the day and defending to the hill to salary paylian and her family after those revolations about her daughter he just mantion, well, I've been looking forward all this week // are Washinton correspondent who was mingling with the deligers on conventions flowen //.This is so unlike the democratic party convention last week, isn't it?

It is clare first start that lost more of that after deligecy of hall is fixicaly smaller we got the bulooms the waiting to drop down when John MeCane comes along // drop down, when Barack Obarma spoke is a spoken big out // rock it far into the sky but the part from that yet is moved here different as he said the stress of Gustav we saw at the begining of the advancer and the pill for money the end of the advance and  pills for money will with the two rock stars of day for filectical that // Bush the first Lady and Sindy MeCane the wife of John MeCane // want to become the first lady and again to talking about the need to spent money,to donate money to donate effected by hurricane Gustav, but very all day in many respects.

// paylian story talking about her 17 years old unmarried daughter is precnent,I have not found that anyone here but // upset are worried about that.

No,I think that was contrast so early of the day when the story first broken we put it to people have you heard about this may happen that was a great // shock, you know there is a lot of excited about several paylian here amoungs of deligate she // someone woman say last few days of exciting debats but she say // degeste that their may reaction // is family matter, this is something for them, look at they headled she  they are also keeping the child and someone was prolife, person that is very important things, well,I think that could you say they have to turned it round to something positive and also help them by Barack Obarma he also of course said families offer limites my own have me when she was 18.

// // as you mention that has been picked up the people coelise around this one opinion has been very much put down out in talking points this is how we against to adressed.I've been talking to congress women // from New Mexicos.

there are a lot of focus on denify with problems in people's families whether is a 17 year-old his parent all kinds of problems of families,I think it is what the things about the paylian that is refreshing about he,is the typical of relator in a little bit more, you know she has 5 kids // freshion business, her husband was work on the north slow but remember still works on union and she can't get it ,now I think she probaly gets be more.

That my mean the American people have a lot of thinpercy for her and her family and they are related doesn't nacessary mean they want have to be adviced by the president.
