The disgraced American financier Bernard Madoff has admitted swindling investors out of tens of billions of dollars in what has been called the biggest ever fraud of its kind. He pleaded guilty in New York to 11 charges, including money laundering and theft. He is still awaiting sentencing. Here is our North America business correspondent Greg Wood.

A U. S. official has said that Mexican drug gangs are the biggest organized crime threat facing the United States. Roger Rufe of the Department of Homeland Security said there were plans to send troops of the National Guard and the Department of Defense or DOD to the border if other agencies became overwhelmed. He told a congressional panel that the US did not want to militarize the border with Mexico, but would do so if necessary.

Last week, Sudan expelled more than a dozen aid groups after an International indictment was issued against President Omar al-Bashir for alleged war crimes in Darfur. Karen Allen reports.

After the meeting in southern England, the ministers agreed to a number of broad principles without specifying details. In a joint statement, they said their top priority was to get lending going again. Oil ministers from the 12 OPEC countries have agreed they won't reduce the amount of oil they are currently producing. However, they will strictly enforce cuts they'd announced earlier of more than four million barrels a day. The ministers, meeting in the Austrian capital Vienna, will try to establish how to respond to the recent big falls in the price of oil. It's now trading at about a third of the price it reached last year.

Reports from El Salvador say voting has been going peacefully in the country's presidential election. The candidate of the former left-wing FMLN rebel movement, Mauricio Funes, is challenging the right-wing government that's held power for more than two decades since the end of the civil war. Mr. Funes’ conservative opponent Rodrigo Ávila is having to deal with disillusionment with the ruling party at a time when economic hardship has been increasing. Thousands of Salvadorans living in the United States, most of whom support Mr. Ávila, have flown home so they can vote. The FMLN won the country's first ever congressional elections in January. There are about 4,000 observers in El Salvador to monitor the vote.

The main opposition leader in Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, has left his home city of Lahore, and joined thousands of supporters on a protest march to the capital Islamabad. Mr. Sharif, a former Prime Minister, and a long-term opponent to the President Asif Zardari defied what he said had been an illegal house arrest order. Barbara Plett reports from Islamabad.

Two Israeli traffic police officers have been shot dead in the West Bank. Their car was fired on from another vehicle. Israeli security forces are looking for the gunmen who they said were Palestinians. The shooting happened near an Israeli settlement in the Jordan Valley. Two checkpoints in the area had been removed in the last week to ease travel for local Palestinians. A group named after an assassinated Hezbollah commander has said it killed the officers.

An explosion at a world heritage site in Yemen has killed four South Korean tourists and a local man. Security officials believed that it was a terrorist attack, but didn't rule out other possibilities. The blast happened as the tourists were taking pictures of the sunset from a hill overlooking the historic city of Sheba which is known for its mud-brick skyscrapers in southwest Yemen.

Soldiers in Madagascar have stormed and occupied one of the palaces of the embattled President Marc Ravalomanana. Around 100 troops backed by tanks set off explosions and rounds of gunfire once inside the compound. They also seized the central bank. The president was said to be in another palace some distance away where hundreds of his supporters have formed a human shield to prevent any further military move against him. The opposition leader Andry Rajoelina has called for the president's arrest. He's denied the action amounts to a coup.

Leaders from Africa have warned that parts of the continent could be plunged back into conflict if they don't get help to recover from the global economic downturn. The warning came as African leaders gathered in London to pass on their concerns to the British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, the host for the G20 summit in April. The Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf said funding the poorest now would cost much less than peacekeeping operations later.

在翻译时某个单词不能只局限于目前掌握的意思，这样的话学的就很死，而且有些句子根本就不会翻了。比如说President Barack Obama has described as an outrage the payment of large bonuses to some senior employees of the insurance company, AIG 这句中，describe这个单词初中就知道意思是描述吧，describe as确实称作。。。的意思。还有后面的词outrage，我确信这个单词是看小说的过程中学到的，当时查了，记住的意思肯定只是愤怒，暴怒的意思。但是如果将愤怒拿到这，这句英文就没办法翻了，幸亏查了查字典，知道还有暴行的意思。暴行才合适。所以，词汇量，一次多意，还有词组的掌握等还得下苦功夫积累啊。
虽然暂时没有精力和时间确保每句话都翻译的很地道，但是认真的态度是必须的。要不断寻求进步的话，就是不断提高对自己的要求。听力我打算下周1就开始提速，翻译也以今天为分水岭，更加要认真，追求高质量。这样才能在过程中学到东西。英译中至少要保证正确性准确性，然后保证简介和可读性，最好追求美！中译英至少要先保证能够将所有的意思以符合语法规则的句子全部正确表达出来。英译中认真、高质量，再反过来译的时候就会更有效。相辅相成。

The British government clearly believes the Turks and Caicos Islands were in a mess and need to be taken over. Today's foreign ministry statement speaks of abundant evidence pointing to a high probability of systemic corruption or serious dishonesty as well as general administrative incompetence on the islands. A Commission of Inquiry set up last year has recommended sacking the government of Prime Minister Michael Misick and the House of Assembly, handing power to the governor. It could happen within weeks.

Israel said Hamas had withdrawn from understandings reached over the past year and raised what it called extreme demands.

Kidnappers in Somalia have released four United Nations aid workers after holding them for several hours on Monday. The group, three foreign nationals and a Somali translator, had been on their way to a local airport for a flight to Nairobi when they were seized by a group of armed men in the district of Waajid in southern Somalia. The area has been controlled by an Islamist militant group for the past three months.

The American space agency NASA is tracking a piece of debris from an old Russian satellite which it believes could get very close to the shuttle Discovery as it docks with the International Space Station. Computer predictions suggest a piece of junk which is only the size of a mobile phone may come within 750 meters of the space station. Last week, the crew of the station had to leave it temporarily when another smaller piece of debris passed about 4.5 kilometers away.
